Are You Wasting Money on Marketing?

By Maria Peagler

wasting money on marketing Socialmediaonlineclasses 600px

How much have you invested in marketing in 2015?

What was your return on that investment (ROI)?

Not sure?

Neither are most small business owners — but that’s about to change.

Here are the Top 5 ways small business owners waste money on their marketing (stay tuned until the end of the post, as you’ll get free resources to help you make smarter marketing decisions):

1. Purchasing Fake Fans/Followers from Fiverr

I love fiverr and use it often for white board videos, audio editing, and other services.

But NEVER buy Likes, Followers, or Engagement from sellers here.

I cannot tell you how many friends, colleagues and clients I have who have done this:  paid an individual or brand to get them more Facebook fans, Twitter followers, you name it.

Look at these “gigs” on fiverr:

Don't waste your marketing budget "buying" fans or followers

Don’t waste your marketing budget “buying” fans or followers

They promise 5,000 Twitter followers, 500 Instagram followers, 150 Facebook fans and more.

But who are these fans and followers?

Will they have any interest in what you’re offering?

They certainly won’t be in your target audience.

Worse, you’ve completely destroyed your social media account, because Facebook will start showing your posts to people who have ZERO interest in them, and your real fans won’t see them any longer.

Lesson: Don’t waste your marketing budget on promises of fans or followers. Earn them the authentic way.

2. Buying Tools or Training You Never Use

Ever purchased the latest marketing training or tool because it sounded awesome (or all of your colleagues use it)? Roslyn has:

wasting money on marketing

Roslyn shared on Facebook she’s purchased multiple programs but never got around to doing anything with them.

So, the next time you’re about to click that BUY NOW button, ask yourself WHEN you’ll make the time to use it.

Lesson: Schedule time to take training courses you buy or learn the new tools you’ve purchased.

3. Not Measuring Your ROI

I asked my Facebook fans how they had wasted money on their own marketing, and they were generous with their experiences.  Joseph Cameron had this to say about his marketing:

He was “Doing a ton of Facebook ads without assigning the proper tracking pixels!”

are you wasting money on marketing

What are tracking pixels? It’s a piece of code that allows you to measure the results of your Facebook ads.

So Joseph was spending a ton of money on ads, but had no idea how they were generating business (if any!).

Lesson: Make sure you can measure the results of your advertising or social media marketing campaigns.

4.  Advertising to the Wrong Audience

In 2009 I invested $1,000 in an ad to HARO (Help a Reporter Out) readers for Color Mastery, my self-published quilting book.

It was a colossal waste of money.

I wasn’t hoping to sell books from the ad; instead, I wanted reporters to learn about the book and generate publicity for it.

HARO’s demographics weren’t available, but it’s audience was likely far younger than the average quilter (aged 59).

I got ZERO publicity from it, other than HARO readers who emailed me to congratulate me on my book.

Lesson: Don’t invest in advertising unless the publication can provide detailed reader demographics

5.  Overspending  on Glossy Marketing Materials

Exactly how many business cards, postcards, and hangtags will you need?

I still have a box full of postcards for Color Mastery: they’re beautiful, but I simply didn’t have enough of a use for them to justify the expense.

How many business cards have you handed out over the last year?

And it’s quite likely at least some of the information on that card is now outdated.

Lesson: When it comes to printed marketing materials, order in small quantities, even though the price-per-unit is higher.

Summary

If you find yourself doing one or more of these marketing mistakes — no worries! We’ve all been there.

Do You Need Your Business to Rank Well in Google?

Who doesn’t?

I’ve got my business ranking on Google’s first page multiple times, but when I debuted my online social media certificate program this year, I knew I had heavy competition.

We’re talking David vs. Goliath: Socialmediaonlineclasses.com up against major universities with large advertising budgets.

They invest heavily in PPC and Adwords with pay-per-click rates around $20 per click.

No way am I trying to compete with those budgets.

After 90 days, my online social media certificate page is ranking on Google’s first page. In this month’s bonus webinars, members learn exactly how I did it (I promise it’s not what you’ve heard before — completely ethical, whitehat tactics), and how they can too.

In this month’s 30-minute, members-only webinar, you’ll learn:

  • how to identify how challenging it will be for your business to rank well in search engines
  • the fastest way for Google to index your page and start ranking your business
  • “secret” tactics you can do yourself to get on Google’s first page
  • and more!

Plus, plenty of time for Q&A, so come with questions, so sign up today!

Video Transcript

Maria Peagler: The way that I do this is with a process called Kaizen. You’re probably familiar with this, but may not be familiar with the term. Kaizen is a Japanese term and while the practice itself originated in America, the companies that are best known for perfecting this process are companies like Toyota and Sony. It’s a process of continual small steps for improvement and the phrase that best describes that is a journey of a thousand miles begins with but a single step. It’s the process of continuous improvement done in very small steps. You will hear me say that in a lot of the training that I do. I’m a big believer in baby steps. Make small steps toward improvement and overtime you end up with a huge result.

I’m going to show you how I apply that process of Kaizen to my goal setting and it’s really three major steps. I create SMART goals. I make time to achieve those goals and I actually score my effort. Now, I’m not actually grading myself, but I do remain accountable. What we’re going to do is talk about all three of these phases of goal setting and I’m going to share some of my goals and how I went about achieving those.

Let’s first take a look at SMART goals. You may already be familiar with this concept. It’s a pretty popular one, but SMART goals are ones that almost make it impossible to fail. Smart stands for specific measurable attainable relevant and time-based. For every goal that you set, you make sure that you answer these questions. If I said that for the third quarter of 2015, I want to create a social media certificate program that’s hopeful, but it’s not as specific as I need to be. I need to say that I want to create a curriculum for an online social media certificate program that has an exam and can be completed in one month. I need to be able to verify how I can make measurable progress. I need to know what resources are available that I need to attain that goal. I need to know why this is relevant. Why do I want to do a social media certificate program? Well, it increases revenue, but it also widens the net of my members to be more advanced students. In time based, this was a goal that I wanted to do in third quarter. That’s an example of each one of these attributes of SMART goals.

Now, I have a blog post on how to set SMART goals, so I’m not going to go into a whole lot of detail about these, but it goes into a huge amount of detail about how to set them and examples for those SMART goals. What I do is I set a new goal every 12 weeks and I do it in my business, in my personal life and in my relationships with family and friends. Over the last 12 weeks, these are the goals that I set for myself. I wanted to create an online certificate program for social media marketing here at socialmediaonlineclasses.com. I wanted to paint more. When the weather is warm and the nature is in its full glory for spring, summer, and fall, I love to be painting. My goal is to paint every day. I wanted to be able to get to see my son. This is my son Sam and he’s the one who’s living in Texas and I went out to visit him this summer. Those were my goals over 12 weeks and those are the only goals I set. I have one major goal in these three areas.

What I’m going to do is walk you through how I actually do this. Now, I keep track of my goals on a spreadsheet, but you don’t have to do that. You want to do it in the way that’s easiest for you. It could be a spreadsheet. It could be just in a journal. It could be on a piece of paper. It could be in a lot of different ways, but this is the way that I do it. I’ll say what my goal is right here, I wanted to develop an online certification, the test and the directory. Then, I have each element of that SMART goal, specific measurable achievable relevant and time-based. I answer that question for each one of these, so for specific, what does the outcome look like? Well, if I have a social media certification level, I’d have a final exam that certification members can take and upon passing, they get a certificate and can be listed in our directory.

Measurable, how can I track that progress? Well, I can use a spreadsheet and I can also use a project management tool called Trello. Now, these are only tools that I use. Your tools may be very different. You can do this just on a paper calendar. Achievable, what resources must be in place? Will, these are all the tools that I needed to create this goal. Relevant, what purpose does this goal have? I wanted to increase sales among people who were more advanced. I have the timeframe, I wanted to do it over the course of 12 weeks. Then what I do is I take that 12-week goal, you can see this is for third quarter of 2015 and I break it down every week into weekly task.

The original blog post appear here.

In Socialmediaonlineclasses.com, you get classes on every major social network, infographics, webinars, and 1:1 coaching with me. I hope to see you inside Socialmediaonlineclasses.com.

Who Sees My Stuff on Facebook? Business Page vs. Personal Profile

By Maria Peagler

Do you want over a billion people seeing your family vacation photos?

Didn’t think so.

Do you want over a billion people seeing your business page?

Absolutely!

So what’s the difference? That’s what you’ll learn in this post (and I share a little-known tip at the end).

Facebook’s 1 billion users also make it the United Nations of social networks. Which begs the question, “Who exactly among those 1 billion people sees what I’m doing on Facebook?”

If you’re a business owner who has a Facebook page, here’s a primer that clarifies who sees what you do on both your personal profile and your business page, and how you can control all of it, at any time.  What follows is an infographic and a deeper discussion of each section:

facebook business page or personal page

Personal Profile vs. Business Page

Your personal profile is your personal account on Facebook.  You can have only one personal account, and it’s from here you invite people to be your friends.  You can have up to 5,000 friends.

You also have Privacy controls on your profile.  You control who sees your posts, photos, and when you comment on a friend’s post.

Your business page is where you market your business on Facebook.  You create your business page from your personal profile, and you can have unlimited business pages (although having too many gets cumbersome to manage).

When someone clicks Like on your business page, they become a Fan, and your page has no limit to the number of Fans it can have.

You also have no privacy controls whatsoever on a business page.  That’s as it should be, since you’re marketing here.  It’s not where you share your vacation photos!

How-To Tip:  if you are planning to use Facebook only for business and not socialize using your personal profile, you have little chance for success.  The people who use Facebook to the greatest success use it for both personal & business.  If you’re not on Facebook consistently, you won’t generate much interest here.

Who Sees My Personal Profile?

Everyone can see your name and headshot (called your profile photo) on Facebook.  Beyond that, you are in complete and total control of who sees your personal information.

You can make your personal profile completely private, share it with your friends, with your friends and their friends, or customize who sees your profile.

Who is a friend on Facebook?  Someone who you’ve invited to connect and they agreed. Or someone who invited you to become a friend and you said “Sure!”

Facebook friends require permission to access your profile.  Your friends see your posts, your photos, and pages you like.

You can also override the privacy settings on any post as you write it using the Audience Selector.

You can also review your past posts using the Activity Log from your Timeline.  It shows you your previous posts and who you shared them with.

Anytime you need to change your Privacy, go to the Settings gear icon on the Facebook main menu, and select Privacy Settings.

Who Sees My Business Page?

Business pages don’t require your permission for people to view them:  anyone can see your page.

People who Like your page are called Fans, and they will see your business posts in their NewsFeed.

The number of fans who see your posts is called Reach.  In 2015, Facebook reach is in the single digits for the average business page.  The more a fan engages with your posts, the more consistently they’ll see your posts.

Why is reach so small?  You have limited space in your Facebook NewsFeed:  most people like 150 brands on Facebook.  If they saw posts from every brand, there would be no room for their friend’s posts.

Facebook also limited your reach once it went public and needed to generate higher revenues.  So it makes sense to use Facebook ads, which done wisely, is the cheapest advertising you’ll ever do.  You also get detailed metrics of who your ad reached and who clicked on it.

Also, when your fans engage with your page by liking it, commenting on it, or sharing it, their friends will see your page.  The higher your fan engagement, the higher your reach.

The best engagement, in order, is a Share, a Comment, and a Like on your posts. When a fan shares your post, their friends see the post in its entirety. When a fan comments on a post, their friends see the comment and a link to your business page.  When they like your post, their friends see that they liked the post and a link to your page.

When I Like a Post, Who Sees It?

As you’re scrolling through your Facebook NewsFeed, you can click Like on a post to show you enjoyed it, agree with it, or just found it hilarious.

But who sees that interaction?

When you like a friend’s post, people who are friends with both you & your friend see the post. However, if you’ve set your Privacy Settings to Public, then anyone can see it.

When you like a business post, your friends see it (or whomever you’ve identified in your Privacy settings).  When people visit that business page Timeline, they’ll be able to see that you liked that post as well.

What’s My Timeline?

Your Timeline is one main page all about you.  Its a collection of what you’ve shared on Facebook, including your:

  • friends
  • family, workplace, and other personal information you’ve chosen to share
  • photos
  • posts
  • pages you’ve liked

Your Timeline cover is the large photo that appears at the top.  Your profile photo is your headshot.

What’s My NewsFeed?

Your NewsFeed is your Home page on Facebook.  Whenever you login, you’re taken to your NewsFeed, which displays one long page of posts, photos, and videos from your friends and businesses you’ve liked.

It’s also here that you’ll see ads in both the NewsFeed and on the right side of the page.

Your Action Item

Action Item: Want to see your page as others do?  You can!  Go to your Timeline Cover, click on the Settings gear icon, then View As.  Facebook will then let you choose to see your Timeline cover as the public does or as a specific person.

Now you have a much better grasp of what happens when you engage on Facebook, where those interactions appear, and how you can best use Facebook for both personal and business.  Bookmark this post and the infographic so you’ll have a go-to reference whenever you’re wondering “who sees what I’m doing on Facebook?”

Lesson 12: How to Get Found in Search for My Business within Facebook?

By Maria Peagler

Get Informed

Facebook has its own search capability, called GraphSearch, allowing users to search for people, posts, news, and businesses. So how can you ensure your business shows up when people are searching for it or your industry?

That’s what this lesson is all about.

Get Trained

Facebook’s GraphSearch is not as “smart” as other online search engines. If you’re used to Google, Bing and Yahoo, you’ll find Facebook’s search feature to be somewhat primitive.

That’s partly to protect its users’ privacy: Facebook used to display far too much information about people in GraphSearch. They’ve updated it so you can see results only for people who are connected to you or your business.

Watch this video to learn how GraphSearch works and my suggestions for a few “tweaks” to your business page to help people find your business on Facebook (watch this video in its entirety. It may seem like GraphSearch is only for local business, but at the 3:30 minute mark, I show you a way to get around that):

Choose Category

If you want to change to a local business page ( or update your category), go your About page and click Edit to the right of Category. Select a category from the drop down menu and click Save Changes. This will make sure your page is included in search results related to the right kind of pages.

Add Address

This is important if your business has a physical presence. Search results will show pages that a user likes first, but those results will be followed by relevant, local pages. Including your address makes it possible for your business page to show up in the results of people in your area or doing searches on your area. To add or update your address, go to your About page and click Enter Your Address. Add the information and click Save Changes.

Note: if you decide to use a local business page and you’re not local (as in the Arbonne example in the video), omit your street address. You can still get a local business page using just your city & state.

Complete and Optimize Profile

Go through the rest of the About page and fill out as much of the information that you can. Use keywords to describe your business in the Topics, Short Description and Long Description fields.

Optimize Facebook Content

Include relevant hashtags in your Facebook status updates, tag people and pages as appropriate, and encourage others to tag your page. This will improve your results in the News Feed and help build more connections that will improve your GraphSearch position in front of more people.

Go Do It

  • Use the video and the guidelines in this lesson to make sure your Facebook page’s category, About information, and descriptions are complete and optimized.
  • Using relevant terms, hashtags, and tagging other businesses also helps your posts appear in search results.
