How to Tweet Like Trump [INFOGRAPHIC]

By Maria Peagler

Donald Trump dominated headlines from the moment he entered the 2016 presidential race.

He rarely gave interviews or held press conferences, but instead used Twitter as his megaphone to publish his message.

In this blog post, you'll learn how to "tweet like Trump" and dominate the media using Twitter for your personal or business brand.

Let's start with the infographic:

Click on the infographic to download a full-size PDF

1. Make it Simple for Everyone

Trump doesn’t use email or a computer, but does use his Samsung Galaxy smartphone and Twitter. Why? Because it’s the device he’s always got with him and Twitter is fast: tap out 140 characters and boom — he’s done.

He keeps his routine simple and it works for him . . . and the media.

Why does the media report so much on his tweets?

Two words: lazy journalism.

Journalists love Twitter because:

  • it doesn’t require them to read, respond to or delete lengthy messages, as does email
  • they don’t have to attend a press conference or schedule an interview: instead, they can look at Trump’s latest tweet, and build a story around it

The easier you can make it for journalists to cover your brand, the more media coverage you’ll get.

Trump loves Twitter because:

  • it doesn’t require him to hold a press conference, where he’ll be questioned by journalists
  • he can tweet early in the morning (we’re talking 3am here), so he’ll be covered by morning news shows in the U.S.
  • every important political, corporate, financial and media influencer is on Twitter, so he reaches his audience with one tweet

The easier it is for journalists to cover your brand, the more media coverage you’ll get

Click to Tweet

After Meryl Streep's speech at the 2017 Golden Globes, in which she criticized Trump, he took to Twitter at 6am ET the following morning to denounce her. The New York Times ran a story that same morning with the headline, "Donald Trump Say's He's Not Surprised at Meryl Streep's Golden Globes Speech," referring to his tweets, as shown below:

The New York Times included Trump's tweets as a source in their article

Trump has "trained" major media outlets to look to his Twitter feed as sources for their latest stories covering him and his presidency.

2. Use Twitter as Your Main Social Network

Trump uses Twitter as his social network of choice, excluding the rest. While his campaign staff does use other social networks, Trump consistently uses Twitter to publish his message.

In doing so, he’s trained journalists, governments, and CEOs to watch his Twitter feed for his positions and steps he’ll be taking in his presidency.

Trump's consistent use of Twitter has built a habit for himself and for those covering his presidency: Twitter is the Trump News Network (TNN).

@realDonaldTrump uses @Twitter as his Trump News Network (TNN)

Click to Tweet

Do a simple online search for "Trump Twitter" and you'll see a plethora of major news outlets covering his positions, all originating from his Twitter feed:

The Washington Post, Elle, Entertainment Weekly are just a few of the news organizations using Trump's Twitter feed as a source

3. Tweet Early in the Morning

The Washington Post showed the global effect from one week of Donald Trump's tweets on world markets, companies and internet searches. How did they open their article?

"The threat arrived before dawn."

Donald Trump often tweets early in the morning to get coverage in morning news shows

Trump often tweets in the wee hours of the morning, ensuring his message gets out well in advance of the major morning news shows. By doing so, he enables journalists to report on his latest tweets, their meanings, and what they can hold for the U.S.

Trump is a master at dominating headlines: getting ahead of the U.S. news cycle is one of his most effective tactics in ensuring he's the top story of the day.

4. Declare Your Position Boldly

Trump doesn't mince words: he makes his point assertively, often in a brash style and across multiple tweets.

There is no mistaking Trump's position on a topic: he declares his opinion in simple language and no-nonsense terms (one of the reasons many political analysts say his message resonated with so many Americans).

Here is Trump's tweet about Toyota building a new manufacturing plant in Mexico:

You know exactly where Donald Trump stands with this tweet: he uses simple language and cause & effect positioning

Toyota took notice and responded, also on Twitter:

Toyota responded to Trump on Twitter — what I call the Trump News Network (TNN)

5. Build a Newsroom from Your Tweets (BONUS)

Want to make it even easier to get media coverage for your brand from Twitter? Build a newsroom from your tweets.

During Trump's campaign, his staff saved important positioning tweets on a website page titled "Content Center," which served as his newsroom for the media:

Trump's staff built a newsroom on his website by displaying important positioning tweets

Again, this made journalists' jobs easier, as they didn't even have to search Trump's Twitter account for his tweets. Instead, they go could to his website newsroom and get exactly what they needed.

You don't need a staff do this: you can embed your important tweets on a website page easily, then call it your "Media Center" or "Newsroom." The impact it will have on getting media coverage for your brand will be exponential.

Summary

Notice how simple these tactics are? Trump focused on his strengths, kept his messaging simple, and let his team do the rest.

Don't have a team? No worries: skip the newsroom and use the other four tactics.  Soon you'll see your brand in the headlines, just like Trump.

Webinar Transcript

So, first, what the heck is a swipe file? If you are not in the marketing field, swipe file is probably not something that you've heard of. It is basically your best of 2016. Anything that helped your business be successful in 2016 goes into your swipe file. It's basically a "best of," and it can be the best of a lot of different things. The best events you held, the best products you offered, the best social media posts you did, anything that contributed to your brand's success this year is something you want to include in this swipe file.

What was your best Facebook post? By best that's going to be different for different brands. You may define best by most engagement while some other brand may define it by more sales. So, identify how you define what your best Facebook post is and that's something that you'll want to include in your swipe file. What's your best website page? What's the most popular? What's your most popular email? Those are all the types of things that we're going to be including in this swipe file, and it will serve as the foundation for your brand for next year.

Everything that you're including in here will be a reminder to you going forward that this is what worked, and this is what you need to do more of in the coming year. Here is what you're going to do to build your own swipe file. You're going to measure the results that you got in 2016. What were your best of? Who was your most profitable client? What were your most profitable products and services? What were your best email campaigns? Your best Facebook posts? Your best twitter post? Anything like that. You're going to measure those results and I'm going to show you how to do that and make it really, really simple for you.

You're also going to open templates that I'm giving you here that you can use to document that data and then build your swipe file from those templates. So I'm going to make this really, really simple for you. The first thing that you want to do, and the first thing that I did when I was building my swipe file, was I needed to measure the results first. You won't be able to know what your best products, what your most profitable clients are, what your best Facebook posts are until you measure your results. So what I'm going to do is to review the lessons that we have on measurement and show you where those are and what you can measure.

Now these are the lessons on analytics and insights at SocialMediaOnlineClass.com and these here are actual links to these lessons. So you can click on these and actually go to these. You're going to go open the templates that you're going to get from me. That was one of the templates, that spread sheet is one of them. You're actually going to get three templates and I'm going to give you the link here in the webinar, but they're also going to be in each of these templates themselves. The first is that best of spread sheet that you can use in either Excel or Google and that's where you import your data into.

Once you've got that data then you're ready to start building your own swipe file, and I'm giving you a swipe file template in two different formats. The first one is in a presentation format, like a Power Point, like what I'm using year. It's in Google Slides, but you can use this with Power Point, or Keynote, or anything. It's a PPTX file which is Power Point. I'm also giving you an infographic, so that if you want to show your client, or if you want to keep track of everything on one page for your business you can do it on a one page infographic. It again is Google Slides.

In Socialmediaonlineclasses.com, you get the most up-to-date classes on every social network, infographics, webinars, and 1:1 coaching with me.  I hope to see you inside Socialmediaonlineclasses.com!

Webinar Transcript

We're all familiar with Live from New York, it's Saturday Night. Well now, you can go live from your phone, your tablet, and your computer for your business for free. You don't need special equipment. You don't need a director. You don't need a set. You don't need a cast, just you and your phone, or you and your computer. It has never been easier, and you can broadcast live, so no matter where you are or what you're doing, you can broadcast live.

The best part about this is it is so easy. Apps have really figured out that in order for people to really want to do something with their app, it has to be super simple, and video has never been simple until now. Here is why I like it so much. You can do instant live video with no uploading. Normally, uploading a video can take hours. Like this webinar, when I'm done, I will upload it. It will probably take at least an hour or maybe two.

It takes a long time to upload video. I will also have to edit this webinar that we're doing. When you do live video, there's no editing, and you don't need any special equipment. You literally tap your screen, and you're broadcasting live, which is so, so incredible. What are the apps that you can use to do this with? Well, there are three, Facebook, YouTube, and Instagram. There's a little asterisk beside Instagram because it's not ready yet, but it's coming.

The two that we're going to focus on today are Facebook and YouTube, and they're called Facebook Live and YouTube Live. Now, I'll tell you at the outset, Facebook has really outdone YouTube on this. Even though YouTube is the video channel, they've had live video for a long time, but they didn't brand it correctly. They made it over complicated, and people just didn't use it, so once Facebook came out with Facebook Live, they changed their platform, and made it a lot easier, and called it YouTube Live.

I'm going to see what we're getting here in terms of what people want to see from the webinar. Let's see here. There we go. Let's see. We're going to exit full screen. I'm not seeing anything from you guys. I need you to tell me what the one thing is that you want to see from today's webinar. What do you want to know about doing Facebook Live or YouTube Live? Let's take a look at Facebook first. Facebook Live is their live broadcasting tool, and it is mobile only. It will probably stay that way, because most people use Facebook from their mobile phones.

It's just easier for them to offer Facebook Live on a mobile device, so it is mobile only. What kind of things should you be broadcasting? Here are some things that I've done. I did an update. I showed the screen for the new blogging 101 lessons. That was breaking news because this is a brand new class, and these are new lessons that I'm adding weekly. I also did an announcement about an upcoming webinar about the editorial calendar. Again, that was breaking news.

This was some behind the scenes Facebook Live that I did on how to create an editorial calendar. I showed you ... I let you watched over my shoulder as I created an editorial calendar for the next quarter, so this was a tutorial of sorts. These are all Facebook Live videos. You can see I've done them ... The shortest one is a minute-and-a-half. The longest one was almost an hour, and it really was an hour because these three were all part of the same video. The reason it's showing up as three separate ones is because the video quality was spotty, and so it would stop and start and stop and start.

Here is what I recommend. For Facebook Live video, I personally, if you were going to do a video on Facebook, this is really the only way to do it. There's really no reason to be uploading a lot of video, and doing stuff like that unless it's just something that you cannot do from your mobile phone. Do breaking news, a virtual tour of your business, something that's behind the scenes. Think about all the things that you do in a day that the general public doesn't get to see.

Give them a sneak peek into something that would be fascinating to them that they normally don't get to see. You could do tutorials like I did down here, or even event coverage. We just got off a huge political season. You saw a lot of people doing Facebook Live at rallies. You see a lot of event coverage at conferences, fashion shows. I have a colleague who does a lot of Facebook Live events from wholesale trade shows that are not open to the public showing brand new products that are going to be coming soon.

These are all the kind of things that you can do with a live ...
