Maria Peagler: What works, what really works in driving traffic? Because everybody out there will tell you that they have the perfect solution for driving traffic. I’m going to tell you what I have found in my experience works. It’s often not what you hear from other so-called marketing experts. First of all, any platform whether it’s SEO, whether it’s blogging, whether it’s social media or advertising, anything will work if you do it consistently, if you focus on the people who are most likely to buy from you, and you measure your results. You can use anything if you do these three things. I cannot tell you how important these things are because what I see is, first of all, people get really excited about starting something new, and it doesn’t work, and then they drop it.

I understand, I’m there too. Right now, I’m running a Facebook ad that’s not working very well, but I’m not quitting. I am going to change that ad, I’m going to change the targeting, I’m going to change the creative on it. Same thing with posting. What I posted in the Mastermind Group today that worked so well is … I’ve noticed that in Facebook, organic reach has really been down since the Super Bowl, and that’s because so many people were on Facebook during the Super Bowl and advertising during the Super Bowl, that it’s taking a while for reach to get back up, and so I’ve been doing a lot of experimenting, and I found something that really works, and so I am consistent with it.

I post once a day, I don’t post a ton, I advertise consistently, and if it’s not working, I measure what is working and I fix it. So really be consistent and persistent about this. Remember, you don’t want everybody, you want the people who are going to be most likely to buy from you, that qualified traffic. Here, what I’m going to do next is I’m going to talk about the three sources of traffic that I have found in my experience to be the most effective, what I call the low-hanging fruit. The things that just by putting in a little bit of effort yield really big results.

Now, I want to say to you I am not suggesting in any way that you have to do any of these. I’m not suggesting that you abandon what you’re doing now and focus on these. What I am suggesting is these are something for you to think about and maybe to incorporate into your marketing efforts in the future. The first one is, blogging. Robin, you said that you wanted to learn about SEO, you really wanted to focus on that. We’ve done a lot in your coaching on focusing on getting links and helping with SEO. One of the easiest things that you can do and that you are in 100% control of is blogging.

I realize that blogging takes a lot of effort, but I have tried to make blogging for our members as easy as possible. The reason that blogging works so well is for a couple of different reasons. One is, if you blog on a consistent basis, you are giving search engines fresh content from you. Search engines love new content, and they like old websites because it shows that, that you’re a veteran and you’ve been around for a while, but they like seeing an old website putting out new fresh content, and so blogging is the easiest way to do that. The other reason I like it is because anything that you put out online on your blog stays there forever.

In Socialmediaonlineclasses.com, you get classes on every major social network, infographics, webinars, and 1:1 coaching with me. I hope to see you inside Socialmediaonlineclasses.com.

A Facebook post will scroll off your screen, an ad is only good for as long as you pay for it, but your blog is free, it takes only your time, and the results are forever. Here is what I have found that works really, really well and these are the resources here at socialmediaonlineclasses.com that you can use to really get some great results for blogging. The first one is, the WordPress Website in an Hour webinar. I call this the WordPress Website, but you can also build a blog with WordPress. This is a bonus webinar where I built a WordPress site in one hour. I am so proud of Veronica who’s on our webinar today. She built a website using WordPress from this webinar, and she built a website for an independent grocery store, and it is beautiful. Every week, they post their specials, and that’s another form of blogging, and it’s really going to help them get traffic to their website.

Another resource is the OneClick Blog Post article. This is an article where I show how you can automate your blog post from doing an Instagram photo. It’s literally a 60-second blog post, I mean, it does not get easier than that. We also have the Content Marketing Made Simple webinar. This is another webinar that I really, really recommend because it shows you how to put out a lot of content without spending a lot of time on it. It shows how we use templates here at Social Media Online Classes, how we often will dictate content into a smartphone, how we use, kind of, the same resources over and over again to make it look like we’re a very prolific content marketing entity. We look a lot bigger than we really are.

The last thing is the DIY Blog Tour. We have a bonus webinar on this that is one hour. I also offer a separate online course on this. The DIY Blog Tour is basically an online publicity tour that is for a very focused amount of time, and is one of those things where it seems like you’re everywhere for about a week or two. It’s what movie studios do when they have a new movie coming out. It seemed like in December we saw nothing but Star Wars on commercials, on the radio. It’s what authors do when they do a book tour. A blog tour works, it is how I went with my quilting book Color Mastery, I went from unknown to Amazon’s top-10 in two weeks.

In Socialmediaonlineclasses.com, you get classes on every major social network, infographics, webinars, and 1:1 coaching with me. I hope to see you inside Socialmediaonlineclasses.com.

Socialmediaonlineclasses.com Donates 100% of Super Sunday Bootcamp Proceeds to Kiva Micro-Loans

By Maria Peagler

Socialmediaonlineclasses.com donates to kiva

ATLANTA, GA — Socialmediaonlineclasses.com held its first-annual SuperSunday Bootcamp on SuperBowl Sunday, Feb. 7, 2016, and donated 100% of the proceeds to Kiva micro-loans, supporting small business owners worldwide.

WHAT WAS SUPER SUNDAY BOOTCAMP?

For its inaugural year, the SuperSunday Bootcamp was a three-hour how-to webinar focusing on how small businesses could build automations to systemize many of their behind-the-scenes operations, so their owners could focus on revenue-generating activities.

WHO WERE THE KIVA LOAN RECIPIENTS?

Socialmediaonlineclasses.com donated to borrowers in seven different countries, including Peru, Paraguay, Armenia, Honduras, Georgia, Cambodia and Nicaragua. While we don't have room to list every loan recipient, here are a few of the borrowers (with links to their Kiva pages):

Socialmediaonlineclasses.com donates to Alejandro in Peru Kiva.org

Socialmediaonlineclasses.com donates to Koe Rory Group Kiva.org

Koe Rory Group Grocery Store in Paraguay

Socialmediaonlineclasses.com donates to Maro in Armenia Kiva.org

Maro in Armenia

Peagler homeschools her high school-freshman son, and turned the business donation into a teachable moment by allowing him to select the Kiva borrowers.  He reviewed the Kiva website, read the borrowers' stories, and chose the people whose stories resonated with him.  He got a lesson in word economics and the importance of giving back to the community.

We combined social good and the reach of the internet to empower businesses across the globe. Socialmediaonlineclasses.com members hail from six continents, and many Kiva borrowers come from countries where small business support is non-existent.

SUPER SUNDAY BOOTCAMP: BUSINESS AUTOMATION

For only $7, bootcamp attendees got the three-hour live webinar, the webinar replay, an mp3 audio recording, slide deck, and infographic.  The topics covered in the webinar included:

    • What you can automate in your business and in your life (and what you should never automate)
    • What successful automation looks like: a case study
    • How you can identify tasks in your business (and your life) that you can automate
    • An SMOC member favorite: automate social media marketing: post once and have it go to every social network (including Instagram!)
    • How to put recurring tasks or projects you don't enjoy on "auto-pilot" — without your involvement!
    • How to create automated email and phone communications (great for outstanding customer support)
    • Best practices for systemized file sharing with clients, employees, and family — we use this to create our own stock photo library
    • Create a blog post in 60 seconds by uploading an image to Instagram (I do this!)
    • Don't have for social media? Automate it from your blog posts!
    • Tired of typing the same stuff over and over again? Save keystrokes by automating repetitive phrases, paragraphs, and even code. This is a critical element of my Twitter Success System!
    • How to repurpose your existing content to use on your website, blog, social media, whiteboard videos and more
    • The "secret" to measuring your marketing efforts easily using a free tool
    • Discover how you can outsource to a personal assistant (for as little as $25/mo)
    • My favorite automation: create an email marketing automation that works 24/7 (yes, even while you sleep!)
    • Best practices, apps & tactics touse your smartphone as your personal assistant (it's not Siri!)
    • How to automate BIG tasks like shipping and accounting (freeing you up for revenue-generating projects)
    • My favorite project management tool: it's visual, simple, and we use it daily to stay on track
    • How to schedule meetings instantly -- no back and forth emails, calendars, or voicemails
    • How to systemize challenging tasks that don't seem to have an answer
    • How to train your team by creating your own wiki (easily!).

Peagler will use the webinar as the framework for an online course costing significantly more than the bootcamp.  Her clients are often overwhelmed by social media marketing and don't make time for it, so she wanted to share how she was able to "scale" herself and get far more accomplished than many solopreneurs ever thought possible, all using automation tactics.

SuperSunday Bootcamp was a pay-it-forward opportunity: webinar attendees got content that will eventually cost over $500 in an online class, and 100% of their $7 webinar fee went to Kiva micro-loans.

Maria Peagler
Founder, Socialmediaonlineclasses.com

Peagler left registration open for the bootcamp until midnight Valentine's Day for her newsletter subscribers, but the bootcamp is officially closed and will not be made available publicly.  Those interested in learning how to automate their small businesses can look for the online class to debut in the second quarter of 2016.

Until then, here are helpful resources related to the topic of growing small businesses and automations:

SuperSunday Bootcamp will be an annual event open to the public, always held at noon on SuperBowl Sunday.  The webinar is live, but registrants get the recording and all resources, so attendance at the live webinar isn't required.  The 2017 SuperSunday Bootcamp topic will be announced in December 2016.

The original blog post is here.

Maria Peagler:  That’s what you want to do. How do you get those “opens” and “clicks”? The first thing you want to do is get people to open your email. The way you do that, is with your subject line. Now, as small businesses, it’s hard for us to test different subject lines. If you look out there for a lot of advice on email marketing, they always say to test your subject lines. We don’t have time to do that! Instead, I like to learn from the masters of email. The true masters of email marketing are political fundraisers; especially presidential campaigns. The things that I’m going to be showing you all are not an endorsement of any way of any of the candidates that are running for President, or have run for President.

These are simply from articles where marketers have researched how presidential campaigns send out their emails, and what works. Now, this is from Barack Obama’s latest emails, I think, last year. I don’t think it was for his last presidential campaign. I think it was for the different causes that he’s been doing in his second term. Look at these subject lines: “I’m just so happy; I want to do this again; My uncle Teddy; My place, June 14th.” These don’t sound like they’re from the President of the United States. They don’t sound like they’re coming from a company. They sound like they’re coming from your best friend, and they are intentionally done that way. They’re very informal and casual.

That’s the way they want it, because it makes it look like it’s coming from somebody who’s a good friend. Now, we’re going to look at some more of his headlines, and these were from his presidential campaign. The reason that Barack Obama’s emails have been so scrutinized is because he raised more money through email fund-raising than any other candidate in history. A lot of marketing companies really looked at what he did. These again, are subject lines from his emails. Look at this! Look how short they are! One word, “Hey; Wow; Hey, again; I’m saving you a seat; Meet me for dinner; Rain check!”

These things sound like they’re coming from a family member, or a best friend. Again, they’re designed to sound that way. Now here we’re going to look at some that are from all presidential campaigns; these are from everybody. These are how to really stand out. They use two things that really, I have found, especially in my own experience, work. The first is curiosity. Martin O’Malley sent out an email with a subject line of, “Gummy Bears and $1.74.” Now, that makes me curious. I want to open that. Especially if you’re a supporter of Martin O’Malley, you’re going to open it. The other thing that you just cannot beat, is don’t try to be clever.

In Socialmediaonlineclasses.com, you get classes on every major social network, infographics, webinars, and 1:1 coaching with me. I hope to see you inside Socialmediaonlineclasses.com.

Be specific about what’s in the email. “Join Bernie for a rally in Manassas, VA.” If you’re a Bernie Sanders supporter, and you’re anywhere in this area, you’re going to open up that email. Again, here’s another specific headline, “[Poll alert] We’re ahead in Iowa.” If you’re a supporter of this candidate, you’re going to be opening up that email. Again, here’s my favorite curiosity headline, “I was in a jail yesterday.” That one was from Mike Huckabee. Again, if you’re a supporter of his, or even if you’re not, you would probably open that email. Using curiosity, specificity, being informal, casual and brief, are going to get attention.

Lisa, that’s how you grab people’s attention. You need to test this out on your own readers to see what works. These are emails that I have sent over the last three months. They are from January and November. They’re some of my best email subject lines that got the most opens. This one is, “Last chance …” Two words, that’s it.

In Socialmediaonlineclasses.com, you get classes on every major social network, infographics, webinars, and 1:1 coaching with me. I hope to see you inside Socialmediaonlineclasses.com.

TUTORIAL: The One-Click Blog Post (for People Who Hate to Blog)

By Maria Peagler

Ever wish your blog posts could write themselves?

Do you hate to blog? (No worries — I have LOTS of clients who feel the same way.)

This tutorial is going to change your life. Literally.

In this epic article, you'll learn how to put your own blog posts on autopilot: they'll create themselves with little-to-no interaction from you, freeing up your time for family, travel, or other work projects you actually enjoy.

Here's the background: I'm an art quilter, watercolor artist, and author of eight published books. Socialmediaonlineclasses.com is my full-time business, and my art is how I relax.  I now have so many watercolor paintings I wanted to offer some of them for sale on a blog.  But I really don't have time to do yet another blog.

So I systemized the entire blog post creation process: all I do is take a photo of the watercolor painting, and the system takes over from there. It uploads the photo to the blog, adds a title, what type of painting it is (landscape, floral, etc), the price, and even sends it to an e-commerce site where it's listed for sale as well.

mariapeagler art blog

I created this blog post with one click on my smartphone.

THE FINAL BLOG POST

Here's what the final blog post looks like, with each element identified:

Grow Biz in 30 Days with Social Media

Here's what the artwork's automatic listing looks like on the Daily Paintworks e-commerce site:

maria peagler daily paintworks

Let me be clear: this entire process, from uploading the photo, to creating the blog post, to adding the blog post categories, to creating the e-commerce listing on Daily Paintworks was automated by the system I developed.  The only thing I had to do was add a PayPal button to the blog post (which I did later).

Total time for creating the blog post? Less than 1 minute.

Here's a quick table of contents so you can click the links to go directly to the section you need:

CREATING THE ONE CLICK BLOG POST SYSTEM

1. Tools You'll Need

First, let's talk about what tools you'll need to create your own one-click blog post system. Most of you know I'm not a "tools" person, so I've kept it simple:

    • a smartphone
    • image on your smartphone
    • Instagram
    • WordPress blog
    • Zapier (free)
    • if you want to systemize the e-commerce portion of the blog post, you'll need to use a platform that imports your blog posts automatically.  Daily Paintworks does this and costs $12/mo.

If you don't have images for your blog, check out the  DIY Stock Photo Library and Canva tutorials I offer.

2. Upload a Photo to Instagram

The one-click blog post system starts when I upload a photo to Instagram from my smartphone.

I add a caption and a unique tag that identifies this post as the one I want to go to my blog:

one click blog post instagram maria peagler sSocialmediaonlineclasses

The unique #mariapeagler tag is what triggers this post to go to my blog automatically

That's all there is to it for Instagram.  Pretty easy, huh?

Then Zapier takes over . . .

3. Automate the WordPress Blog Post Using Zapier

This is where the magic happens.

By creating one Zapier automation (they call it a zap), my blog posts are automatically created by Zapier every time I upload a photo to Instagram that uses the #mariapeagler hashtag.

Here's how it works:

  • I develop a new zap in Zapier using my Instagram account and my WordPress blog (shown below).
  • Anytime I upload a photo to Instagram, Zapier checks it for the #mariapeagler hashtag. If it finds it ...
  • ... it creates a new blog post on mariapeagler.com using the Instagram image and caption.  It adds several default categories (these are the paintings I do the most) to the blog post.
  • Zapier publishes the blog post immediately.  The Zapier zap is shown below:
one click blog post zapier instagram wordpress Socialmediaonlineclasses

The essential elements of the Zapier zap to automate a blog post from an Instagram image

Once I set up the Zap, I'm all done.  Anytime I upload an image to Instagram with the #mariapeagler hashtag, Zapier immediately creates the blog post on the mariapeagler.com blog.

It takes less than one minute of my time:

one click blog post maria peagler artist blog ssSocialmediaonlineclasses

This blog post was created automatically from an Instagram post & Zapier

5. Set Up Daily Blog Feed Imports to an E-Commerce Website

Daily Paintworks is an e-commerce website allowing you to sell your artwork on their platform.  It's an excellent way for artists to increase their visibility, sell their artwork, and expand their brand outside of their local/regional area.

I add my blog feed URL to my Account Information and check the box stating I want it to pull my blog posts at midnight every day:

daily paintworks RSS feed

In my Account Information, I tell DailyPaintworks the URL of my blog feed

Daily Paintworks then automatically creates a listing for my art. I don't have to lift a finger:

daily paintworks grid

Every one of these listings was created by Daily Paintworks by importing my blog feed

CREATE BLOG POSTS FROM TEXT OR VIDEO

If you don't have an image for your blog post, you can still automate the process using other content & applications.  Here are just a few from Zapier letting you automatically create a blog post from Gmail, a Google Doc, or a YouTube video:

Here's a video tutorial demonstrating the entire process, from creating the Zapier automation to uploading the photo to Instagram to the automatic blog post.  Let me know what you automate to your blog in the comments below, and happy automating!

In the video I promised I would include the code you need for the Instagram image to show up in your WordPress blog post.  It goes in the Content field of your Instagram automation:

Can the Best Marketing Advice Fit on an Index Card?

By Maria Peagler

best social media advice index card maria peagler socialmediaonlineclasses

Last week, NPR shared an interview from a university professor & author who offered his best financial advice on a single 3x5 index card.

It was the ultimate oxymoron: after all, don't you need to be Warren Buffett to profit from a complex stock market?

Apparently not.  Instead, the basics were astonishingly simple (but not simplistic). They flew in the face of the terrible advice many people receive from financial advisers.

"Experts" overcomplicate things.

I see similar overly-complex advice offered for marketing:  strategies requiring expensive tools, a team of marketers, and ridiculous workloads.

Not around here. Instead, I'm offering you the best social media marketing advice — yes — on a single 3x5 index card.

What follows below is the official list, with a brief explanation of each piece of advice, and links for learning more.

Here's to keeping it simple . . .

DON'T TRY TO BE EVERYWHERE

The biggest recipe for failure is to try to be everywhere, spread yourself too thin, and you end up burnt out, with little success to show for it.

Instead, focus on one social network first; give yourself time to learn what works, get a little creative and have fun with it. Then, and only then, move on to your second social network.

Here's our free social media strategy class to get you started:

BE CONSISTENT BY POSTING EVERY WEEKDAY

When was your last social media post?

Has it been awhile? You're not alone.

Here's a real example from one of my clients:

"Sue" works in a small family-owned business, does the social media, the accounting, and the inventory. She usually posts to Facebook only when they have new inventory.  But she's been so busy trying to get their new accounting system to work, she's hasn't posted lately and dreads getting back to it after being gone for so long.

Stop putting pressure on yourself to create a "viral" sensation. You don't have to hit a home run with every social media post.

Instead, be authentic. Share a story, a funny joke, or just check and say, "it's really busy but we're still here!"

Set aside ten minutes every day to do your social media, then be done with it.  And here's some help in creating that content you've been dreading:

WANT TO CREATE CONTENT LIKE THIS IN 10 MINUTES A DAY?

Need to create solid content for your marketing but dread it? Learn how to create your BEST. CONTENT. EVER. In just 10 minutes a day.

KNOW & TARGET YOUR MOST PROFITABLE AUDIENCE

"My boss wants more Facebook fans."

"I just can't reach 10,000 fans/website visitors per month/downloads of my freebie."

More isn't always better.

A huge Facebook fan base get less engagement than a smaller, targeted one.

Sure, you can get 10,000 visitors to your website, but if they leave right away, what did you get out of it? Better to have 3,000 highly-qualified visitors who sign up for an email newsletter, call your store, or purchase your product.

Focus on the most profitable segment of your audience, following the 80/20 rule, as you'll learn in this video:

If you're spending advertising dollars, you need to be targeting your most relevant offer to your most receptive audience: the people most likely to buy from you.  Otherwise, you're wasting your money and their time.

Identify your most profitable audience and focus on them, excluding everyone else.  You can watch the full webinar as a member of Socialmediaonlineclasses.com.

CULTIVATE A VARIETY OF TRAFFIC SOURCES

Avoid putting all of your marketing eggs into Google's basket (or Facebook's).

What's good for stocks works for marketing as well:  DIVERSIFY

diversify traffic social media advice index card

If you've focused on great organic search rankings and a new competitor takes over your #1 position, don't panic. Focus on the same consistency and quality you always have, and bring in a new source of traffic so you won't be overly dependent on organic rankings you can't control.

Similarly, you're likely not reaching as many fans on Facebook as you used to be. Don't get mad, get better.

Better results, that is.  How? By being smarter about how you approach Facebook and other social media.

KEEP SOCIAL MEDIA POSTS SHORT & USE IMAGES

Good news! You don't have to write War and Peace when posting to social media.

In fact, the shorter your post, the more likely it will get read, shared, and clicked on.

Add an image, and you just doubled your chances of all three.

My Facebook post with the highest organic (free) reach from 2015 wasn't even my own content; instead, it was a short blurb about an article in Entrepreneur magazine that had a fabulous photo with it:

FOLLOW UP WITH EMAIL MARKETING

We live in noisy, busy world, filled with images, messages, and distractions.

No matter how consistent you are in your marketing, no matter how compelling your message, it's likely to be forgotten if people don't act on it immediately.

It happens.  Don't take it personally.

Instead, understand that your visitors are interested, but they couldn't get to it immediately. They had to answer a business call, attend a meeting, drive their kids to soccer, take a parent to the doctor, or binge-watch Mythbusters.

But we all have an Inbox, and according to studies, we check it an average of 23 times a day.

We look at our smartphones over 150 times a day. A lot of that time is spent on email.

Get the most out of the website traffic, fans, and social media followers you already have by getting them to sign up for your email marketing, then follow up with them.

Make them a fabulous offer they can't refuse, then over-deliver on it.  In the offer below, I share a checklist for how to sell out on Instagram, based on a case study of a retailer who does it every day.  Who doesn't want that?

MEASURE YOUR RESULTS & ADAPT YOUR TACTICS

If you did nothing else but this one tactic, you would see a huge increase the return on your investment (ROI) in your marketing.

But it's the part few people ever get to.

How do I know? Because analytics lessons are the least-viewed lessons here at Socialmediaonlineclasses.com.

What an enormous missed opportunity.

By measuring the results of last year's marketing, you'll identify what worked well, what didn't, and you can focus on those tactics generating the most revenue.

Here's my confession: I'm not a numbers person.  I'm an author, an artist, a trainer, and numbers simply don't come easily to me.

But you better believe I measure my marketing results.  Weekly. Monthly. Annually.

My business depends on it, and it's the best learning tool I have.

Here are some ways I make it easy to measure your own results:

EFFECTIVE MARKETING SHOULD BE SIMPLE

Here's the secret to success in any marketing you do:  keep it simple.  You're far more likely to look forward to it, be consistent with it, and be successful with it if you keep your marketing efforts manageable and effective.

Sounds easy doesn't it?

It can be.  IF you listen to the right "experts."
