You're back? Awesome.  Ok, think of social media as a dynamic gallery for your work that can reach buyers, potential students, and collectors. How? Here are a few ideas:

  • give an exclusive behind-the-scenes video tour of your studio
  • share in-progress photos of your current piece, along with the inspiration behind it
  • offer a sneak peek into a series (#30paintingsin30days, #dailypainters, etc)
  • . . . and these are just a few ideas to get you started.

My one piece of advice?  Just. Get. Started. Don't worry about how much time it's going to take. In this post, I'm sharing shortcuts I use to post my own art to social media in just seconds.

Here are nine ways to sell more art using social media marketing, including case studies and how-to guides. Read the post in full or select a topic from the table of contents to jump to it . . .

1. Meet Maria Peagler, Watercolor Artist

If you've been reading this blog for a while, you know I'm the founder of Socialmediaonlineclasses.com and author of a book on color for quilters.  What you may not know is that I'm also a watercolor artist.

2. Rachel Derstine Sells $4,000 Art Quilt on Facebook

Rachel Derstine is an art quilter I met when I presented workshops on social media marketing to the Quilt Professionals Network.  Her work is gorgeous, but even more impressive to me was how smart Rachel was at her marketing.

In one day.

With a four-word Facebook post:

Notice the post wasn't a hard sell? Rachel simply showed up on Facebook sharing a photo of her latest work,  saying "it's done!"

You know you need to show up at the canvas (painters), the studio (quilters, sculptors), or the laptop (writers).  No matter what your art, you need to put yourself in the place of most potential.

To sell your work, the place of most potential is social media.

3. Mavis Stevens Gets Largest Retail Art Sale in 40 Years

4.  How to Quickly Blog About Your Art

This is the shortcut I developed when I wanted to promote my watercolors but didn't want to spend a lot of time doing it.

I created a method allowing me to create a blog post about my watercolors in less than 60 seconds.

That's not a typo, nor is it an exaggeration.  I literally can create a blog post in less than one minute that promotes my art. Here's an example from my artist blog:

Note: why am I mentioning a blog before social media marketing? Because your blog, and your website, are the only two online marketing platforms you own.  You set the rules, you can post what you want, and done correctly, you can get free traffic to your site using easy SEO techniques.

5.  How to Use Video Marketing to Sell Your Art

The key to using any online platform to sell your art is . . . 

. . . not to sell your art.

Instead, create a relationship with your audience. Video is an excellent way to do that, and here are two examples:

21 Ways to Extend the Life of Your Content [INFOGRAPHIC]

Your greatest resource as a small business owner is your time — you need to invest it only in activities that pay off over the long term.

So when it comes to content marketing, I'm always looking for evergreen campaigns that produce results for years, not seconds (the average attention span of humans is 8 seconds ). 

Much has been published about the fleeting life of social media posts, and with platforms changing constantly, it begs the question: what am I getting for my time investment?  

Ultimately, I wanted to know this: what exactly is the lifespan of different content, and how can we extend it to be as long as possible?

1. The Big Winner: Blogging

A recent study found the average lifespan of a blog post to be 2 years.  For math-lovers, the actual formula used in the study was 1.4x, with x= the first month's pageviews for the blog post.

That means if the blog post you published last month got 100 pageviews, you can expect it to get 1.4x100 = 140 pageviews over its lifetime.

How does that translate into 2 years?  Good question (I wondered that too).  The study showed the traffic generated by the blog post reached 50% of its lifespan on Day 10, 72% on Day 30, 90% by Day 300, and finally 99% by Day 700:

This follows the pattern of the long tail, which has become a standard in search engine optimization: By selecting relevant keywords and topics, you'll get a significant amount of traffic over time, instead of a post that's popular for a week then its traffic dies off.

My Results

While not scientific, I compared my own blog traffic to the 1.4x formula identified by the study.  What I found was that on average, my own blog posts continued to get traffic for a time period almost double that found in the study: 2.7x.  Our most popular blog post of all time at Socialmediaonlineclasses is from 2011, and it still generates organic search traffic.

How to Extend the Life of Your Blog Posts

How do I continue to get traffic from a 5-year-old blog post? Several ways:

  • I made the blog post "sticky" and easily shared by including an infographic and a video
  • I shared the blog post on multiple social media platforms (it's been shared over 5,000 times on Pinterest)
  • I continue to update the blog post over time

Eventually all blog posts will go to their grave if you don't update them.  Let's face it:  a 5-year-old blog post about social media is practically ancient, but because I've continued to refresh it, it's as relevant as the day I wrote it.

Publishers who spend significant time developing strong content know the key to making it evergreen is to continually add to it: it modernizes the blog post, adds new context, and deepens the relationship with the reader.

Which brings me to a disturbing trend:  many blogs and media outlets are removing dates from their content. I find that hypocritical from an industry that proudly announces its "transparency."  People have caught on quickly that no date = outdated content.

You won't find me removing dates of my content here; instead, I modify the blog post title and first line of the post to show when the content was last updated.

2. Pinterest: Social Media Winner

Out of all major social networks, Pinterest ranks #1 for lifespan, with the average pin driving traffic over 4 months.

If you have a hugely popular seasonal pin (Halloween costumes, Hot Cross Buns), you'll see an even longer return on your content investment.

Note these pins likely originated from a blog post, so combine blogging and Pinterest and you have a powerful content lifecycle.

My Results

I've seen a huge correlation between the popularity of a pin and longevity of my blog posts.  If a pin continues to be repinned for months or even years, the original blog post gains greater life.  

This infographic is the first I published in 2011, and it continues to be the most repinned content from my blog.  Even though I've updated this infographic each year, the original version gets the most repins:

How can you give your pins the greatest chance of a long life?

  • Colorful, even garish images demand attention
  • Long pins combining images and text get the most repins
  • Consider boosting your pin with an ad for even more exposure

The original Facebook marketing infographic I shared above is colorful.  Subsequent versions of the infographic are more harmonious and subdued, and didn't get nearly as many repins.

Long-form pins offering both images and explanatory text are the most popular.  How-to pins followed by a link in the description are a powerful combination for driving traffic.

My most popular pin of 2015 and 2016 is a shockingly bright infographic I boosted for only one week.  Before that week, it wasn't getting much in the way of repins.  After I advertised it for a week, it was my most popular pin, week after week:

3. YouTube: Long-Term Solutions

YouTube videos come in at #3 with over 20 days of lifecycle. This study found videos receive the majority of their engagement after 3 weeks.  

People go to YouTube to find solutions, and while they may not be engaging with your video, they'll continue to watch it.  

My Findings

This SMOC video from 2013 is a tutorial on how to master Hootsuite in one hour.  It's our most popular video because it offers an easy solution to a pain point:  people find Hootsuite confusing:

Don't despair if your video hasn't taken off after 20 days.  I recorded this video for my book Color Mastery, and it went nowhere for six months.  Then a viewer in Denmark shared it and the views skyrocketed.  It's had over 38,000 views, which for a quilting video is huge:

How to Extend the Life of Your YouTube Video

Want to keep people watching your videos as long as possible? Here's how:

  • Upload videos on evergreen topics - don't focus on short-term problems or solutions
  • Record longer videos to keep people on your channel
  • Make your video easy to find by including relevant keywords in your video title, description and tags

Don't be afraid of recording a long video: people will watch it if there's something in it for them.  Teach them, entertain them, and you'll find your view count increasing over time.

Notice the titles of those popular videos from each channel?  They're to the point: not clever or catchy, but exactly the wording people use when they search for a solution on YouTube.  Make sure you know your audience and their language, and include it in the title, description, and tags.

4. LinkedIn: 24 Hours of B2B

Business-to-business social network LinkedIn ranks #4 in terms of content lifecycle, with posts here lasting an average of 24 hours.  While it doesn't have as many users as Facebook, its longer post lifespan and affluent demographic make it an attractive place to do B2B networking.

My Findings

My most successful post on LInkedIn is, not surprisingly, an infographic about LinkedIn:

Published in 2013, it continues to drive traffic to the original blog post on the SMOC website, far beyond the 24 hours most posts last.  What's kept it alive so long?

Groups.  Most of the LinkedIn referrals come from people in a LinkedIn group who find the infographic and share it with group members.

How to Extend the Life of a LinkedIn Post

Here's how to get the most value out of every LinkedIn post you create:

  • Add your best content to your LinkedIn profile: that automatically extends its lifespan
  • Join groups, engage with members, and share your content in the group
  • Prolong the life of your blog posts by publishing them on LinkedIn Pulse one to two weeks later.

Your profile is the first thing people see about you on LinkedIn. Make a great first impression by putting your best content in a visible place on your profile.  Your post will scroll off the LinkedIn newsfeed after a few hours, but it lasts forever on your profile.

LinkedIn groups are the most affluent community you'll find online.  They're a great place to connect with like-minded professionals and share your content.  Even better is when other group members find your content and share it on their own.

LinkedIn Pulse is the publishing arm of this social network, and you can repurpose your blog posts here after you've published them on your own blog.  They get a new audience, fresh eyes, and the ability to start deep conversations.  SMOC member Lynda Spiegel originally published this post on her blog where it received no comments, but 3 days later on LinkedIn Pulse, it earned over 49,000 views and got 63 comments:

5.  Instagram Beats Facebook & Twitter

Photo-sharing social network Instagram ranks #5 for content lifespan, with posts here lasting an average of 21 hours.  While not a powerhouse of longevity, it does beat both Facebook & Twitter.

My Findings

Instagram has a focused newsfeed, making it easier to grab people's attention without competing with a sidebar with ads or multiple content streams. Even though your image will eventually scroll off the newsfeed, using relevant hashtags allows people to search for content and still find it later.

People find my infographics long after I've shared them by searching for the #infographic hashtag.  I share our Weekly Top 5 infographics, and they get new followers for me every week:

How to Extend the Life of an Instagram Post

Here's how you can get weeks from your Instagram post instead of just 21 hours:

  • Use bright colors with a lot of contrast in your images
  • Make it easy for people to find your content by using popular hashtags in the caption
  • Identify your most popular Instagram posts and do more of them

My most popular Instagram posts are beautiful images.  Instagram is a more personal glimpse of a brand, so I mix some personal images in with my professional ones:

Use hashtags freely here on Instagram: it gives your content relevance & context and extends its lifespan when people search using those hashtags later.

While Instagram doesn't offer analytics (yet), you can use other tools like Statigram and SproutSocial to identify your most popular posts. Learn from those analytics and do more of what people like.

6.  Facebook: Crowded & Fleeting

The giant of social media — Facebook — offers only a 5 hour lifespan for your content, but let's face it: even if only an infinitesimal fraction of its 1.5 billion users sees your content, you've scored a win.

This study found that by sharing links to their content on Facebook, they extended the content's lifespan by 3 additional days.

My Findings

The easiest way to extend your content's lifecycle on Facebook is with an ad.  You boost a post and choose how many days to run it, so you decide how long your content lasts.  I ran an this Facebook ad for over a year:  it took people to a long blog post, and they shared it freely with their friends and colleagues, further extending the life of both the ad and the blog post:

How to Extend the Life of Your Facebook Posts

  • Boost important posts: you can do as little as $1 a day for 10 days
  • Pin your post to the top of your newsfeed: it becomes the first post people see on your Timeline
  • Don't be afraid to repurpose your posts: you reach people on different days & times, so it's unlikely you'll burn out your fans

Boost important posts, especially those announcing big news or promotions. You don't need a huge budget, and you can target your audience to people in your area or interested in your product/service.

Guarantee greater content longevity, by pinning your post to the top of your Timeline.  Facebook used to limit pinned posts to 2 weeks, but that limit no longer applies.

Repurpose the same post over time: our attention spans are short, so even if people saw your post six months ago, they may not remember it or didn't see it the first time around.  I've seen excellent results doing this.

7.  Twitter: Fast & Furious

Coming in last in content lifespan is Twitter, where your tweets last a brief 18 minutes. However, what Twitter lacks in staying power, it makes up for with an abundance of influencers and the ability to post multiple times a day without tiring your followers.

My Findings

I don't expect longevity on Twitter, but I still use it.  It has more influencers than any other social network, because it's simple to engage here.  You can get someone's attention with a creative tweet and make a new connection, and take the relationship from there.

I've interviewed small business owners who get over 70% of their business from Twitter, and they tweet often, as do I.  I tweet up to 12 - 15 times a day, during U.S. business hours.

Tweeting that often doesn't require you to be on Twitter all day; instead, schedule tweets throughout the day, create shortcuts for typing your most popular tweets, and ensure you engage with people who are talking to you:

How to Extend the Life of Your Tweets

You can extend the life of your tweets beyond 18 minutes, and here's how:

  • pin important tweets to the top of your Twitter stream; that guarantees that tweet is the first one people see when they visit your Tweets page
  • Be realistic about how long your tweets last: Twitter is a fast-paced social network, and you're unlikely to get days from a tweet unless you pin it
  • Develop a Twitter success system making it easy to repurpose your most popular tweets (the video above teaches you how)

Similar to Facebook, you can pin important tweets to the top of your Tweets page, which automatically breathes greater life into your best ones.

Be realistic: don't expect days from your tweets: minutes and hours are what you'll get, unless you advertise.

Take advantage of the fast-paced nature of Twitter: tweet often and make it easy to do by developing a system allowing you to spend a few minutes a day scheduling tweets and replying to people engaging with you.

Summary

The greatest investment you can make in your content marketing strategy is to focus on your blog: it has the greatest staying power of any form of content.

Then use social networks to extend the life of your blog post: continue to use the social networks where your audience hangs out, and use the longevity tips I've shared here to maximize the life of your social media posts.

Content is the marketing multi-tool of the 21st century: make yours the best it can be, and then ensure it lasts.  That's what separates the great brands from the rest.

Same Content on Different Social Networks — 8 Social Media Posts You Can Totally Copy

You're ready to write your next social media post . . . 

. . . but how do you tailor it to take advantage of each social network's unique features & capabilities?

That's what you'll learn in this post. We're keeping it simple, using a single piece of content, shared differently on each major social network.

The Post Content​

We'll be using an infographic for our content: the Facebook marketing infographic, updated for 2016.

Feel free to use whatever content you have, as long as it's visual.  

I'm using an infographic because it's what I have readily available. You do the same.  What images come naturally to your business?

Happy client photos? Product shots? Screen captures of a new testimonial? They don't need to be slick, just authentic.

1. The Facebook​ Post

We'll start with the ONE social network that generates the highest amount of interest, and therefore competition.  How can you stand out in a social network where everyone's talking?

This post is all about three things:

  • the image
  • tagging another brand
  • a call-to-action

The image. It's bold, colorful, and cropped to show only part of it. The image dimensions don't fit Facebook's, so I cropped it to show only the top part of the infographic.

Tagging another brand. I tagged Canva, the graphics image editor, as I recommend them in the infographic. It not only notifies them I mention their brand, my post appears to their fans. I just exponentially increased my reach, for free.

A call-to-action. The first word of the post tells people exactly what to do.  I didn't need an ad or a clickable button. I did use all caps to make it stand out.

2. The Instagram​ Post

Instagram (owned by Facebook) just announced they are deciding what you see in your newsfeed based on their algorithm.  Translated into laymen's terms: your reach just went down.

Your success on Instagram hinges on:

  • your image
  • your caption
  • your hashtags

Your image. While Instagram offers tons of filters and editing options, studies show photos without filters get the most engagement. In my experience, bright images also work well, which seems contrary considering all the low-contrast filters they offer. But, the SMOC images that get the most Likes are those that are almost garish in their colors.

Your caption. Two ways to go here: clever or clear.  Clever captions are popular with millennials and hip brands (fashion, makeup, hair ,etc). Clear captions are important if you offer a complex product that needs some explanation (like social media training).

Your hashtags.  Instagrammers love their hashtags, and you can use up to 30 of them. But don't.  Just don't. It's not necessary and makes you look like an amateur.

3. The Twitter​ Tweet

Twitter gives you 140 characters to grab people's attention.  The average life of your tweet is only 20 minutes, so you want to compel people to take action now. Do it by being fascinating, not pushy.

Here's what your 140 characters should include to get results on Twitter:

  • punchy tweet
  • important hashtags
  • a shortened link

Punchy tweet.  Getting your point across in 140 characters is an art. Here's how to do it well: be as descriptive as possible, in as few words as possible.  If that's sounds like an oxymoron, it is.  Follow me on Twitter here and watch how I do it. That's a great way to learn.

Important hashtags.  Hashtags allow you to target your tweet to the right people on Twitter. I used three hashtags here: #Facebook identifies what the infographic is about; #marketing identifies that this a business post; and #infographic tells people exactly what to expect when they click through to my blog post.  Notice I not only targeted my audience, but I weeded out people who were looking for Facebook for personal use.

A shortened link.  Using a link-shortening app like bit.ly or goo.gl is a must, as a full url hyperlink could take all of your 140 characters. Install an extension in your browser letting you do this on the fly makes it much easier.

4. The LinkedIn Post

Here you have the most sophisticated and affluent audience of all the social networks. Your post should reflect that. Here's how:

A LinkedIn post may be the simplest of them all to create, because it's defined as much by what it lacks as what it contains:

  • short, yet sophisticated post
  • a good image (optional)
  • lack of hashtags

Short, yet sophisticated post.  Notice how similar this post is to my tweet? I begin with "All-new for 2016," same as I did in my tweet. But for my LinkedIn audience, I stressed how deep this infographic goes with a possible 4 million marketing campaigns. That could have easily overwhelmed Facebook, Twitter or Instagram users, but LinkedIn users appreciate flexibility and depth of this infographic.

A good image.  You don't see a lot of images on LinkedIn, and fewer outstanding ones. So, if you have a good image, use it. You don't have to be a professional photographer or a graphic designer. You do need to be authentic: that wins every time. Use your own images or customize stock photos if you must use them.

Lack of hashtags.  While you can use hashtags on LinkedIn, they provide no real advantage. In fact, they make it appear you've posted to Twitter and sent your tweet to LinkedIn — you'll likely get less engagement if you include hashtags here.

5. The Google Plus Post

Google Plus makes it easy for your posts to look awesome.  Your images are big, and you can write a long post and format it.  Here's how:

Notice I was able to add a bold subtitle? You can also add italics and strikethrough, as well as numbered lists.

Here's what a Google+ post needs to stand out:​

  • an excellent image 
  • a long post (optional, but effective)
  • formatting, using bold and numbered or bulleted lists

An excellent image.  Google+ was developed with photographers in mind, so you see outstanding images being shared here.  Yours doesn't need to be taken by a pro, but it does need to be clear and at least 400 pixels wide.

A long post.  Google+ has almost no limit to post length, so take advantage of that by providing a lot of value.  Pay-it-forward with a lot of actionable information, and link to a blog post or offer where people can learn more.

A formatted post.  No other social network offers the ability to format post text, so look like a Google+ pro by doing it.  Our Google+ class teaches you everything you need to know to stand out here.

6. The Pinterest Pin

Pinterest & Instagram are both visual social networks, but how people use them are completely different. Instagram is a more personal glimpse at a user's life, while people tend to browse Pinterest for inspiration & ideas.

Give it to them.  They'll share it generously, as shown in the original blog post for the Facebook marketing infographic.  It's been shared on Pinterest over 5,000 times:

I pinned this from the blog post and literally didn't change a single thing.  I used it, as Pinterest created it.

Here's why it works:

  • a colorful image 
  • a link to a credible website
  • specific, yet brief, description

A colorful image.  Pinterest is all about visuals, so you need to have either a beautiful or colorful image here.  Just as with Instagram, I've found the more colorful (and almost garish), the more images get repinned.

A link to a credible website.  Because I pinned this from my website, Pinterest added a hyperlink to the pin with a Visit button.  That's important, because a lot of spammers use Pinterest and their links go to junk websites.  You'll stand out simply by being credible.

Specific, yet brief, description.  Notice the first thing you see in that description is [UPDATED 2016]?  I'm telling people immediately this infographic is current. I get directly to the point.  While you have ample room for a pin description, you can see Pinterest cuts it off and requires people to click to Read More.  Most don't, so get to the point, fast.

7. The Slideshare Presentation

Slideshare is a social network where businesses share their PowerPoint presentations.  Most brands assume Slideshare is only for business-to-business brands.

Not so.

I kept my self-published quilting book on Amazon's top 10 list for an entire second year using Slideshare.  If it works for quilting, it can certainly work for your business.

Here's how I turned an infographic into a Slideshare presentation (done in Google Slides):

Why does it work?

  • presented each section of the infographic, separately
  • explained how to use the infographic to generate Facebook marketing campaigns
  • included a hyperlink to download the full infographic

Presented each infographic section, separately.  This infographic is too detailed to be read on a single slide.  Instead, I pulled out each section, added them to the slide deck, making it easier to consume.

Explained how to use the infographic.  This is an actionable infographic, meaning that brands can use it to generate a possible 4 million marketing campaigns.  I showed exactly how to do that in multiple slides, and generated a sample campaign.  I gave the infographic context and the further explanation people needed to understand it.

Included a hyperlink to download the full infographic.  At the end of the slide deck, I display the full infographic, but it's too small to read on a single slide.  So I included a hyperlink to the blog post so people could download the full version.

Extra Credit: High-Contrast Title Slide.  PowerPoint presentations are no longer boring slides with endless bulleted lists.  They use sophisticated designs, and your title slide needs to stand out to get people to view it on Slideshare.

8. The YouTube Video

Video marketing is the biggest missed opportunity for small businesses: even a poor video is better than no video.

Case in point? I created this video to accompany the original infographic five years ago, and it's not my best work.  But, it's better than not having a video at all.

I kept it simple: I used my smartphone to talk about the infographic and how to use it.  The video is less than two minutes long:

What do you need in a video to make it work?

  • Make it easy on yourself to record a video
  • Be creative by posting different video types
  • Know what to include in your video title & description

Make it easy on yourself to record a video.  A simple, credible video is far more important than one that's slickly-produced. You can use YouTube, for free, to record, edit, and upload your video.  Easy. Peazy.

Be creative by posting different video types.  What solution does your business provide? Do it in video form. When I started my YouTube channel, I created mostly talking-head videos: me looking at the camera & chatting with my audience. I also created a few how-to videos where I allowed people to "look over my shoulder" and look at my screen. I was surprised to discover the screen-sharing videos were far more popular.

Know what to include in your video description.  YouTube is a search engine (owned by Google).  It uses your video title, description, and tags to show your video to people who are searching for it.  You may have the best video in your industry, but if you haven't told YouTube what it needs to know, no one will see it.

Now you've got eight ways you can use the same content to develop unique & creative posts for each social network.  You'll avoid looking like you're auto-posting to LinkedIn from Twitter (this happens a LOT), and you'll stand out in a sea of posts that look the same.

Ebony Love Interview

0:00:00 MARIA: Welcome everyone this is Maria Peagler with Socialmediaonlineclasses.com. And today I have with me Ebony Love the founder of LoveBug Studios and a successful Kickstarter campaign generator. Welcome, Ebony!

0:02:02 EBONY: Hi Maria. Thanks for having me.

0:02:05 MARIA: Absolutely, Ebony I have wanted to do this interview with you for a while because I was fascinated at the whole Kickstarter campaign that you did. I supported you. I contributed to your Kickstarter campaign. Can you tell our listeners out there a little bit about your campaign and your funding goal?

0:02:30 EBONY: Absolutely, Thank you so much Maria for supporting my campaign it really meant a lot to me to see your support there. When i initially started a campaign it was for a book about fabric die cutting and that particular topic is a very niche topic and there’s only a certain segment of the quilting community that’s going to be interested in something like that. Before I went to the expense and sort of going down the path of spending all this money investing in illustrators and graphic artists to solve these things. I wanted to make sure that there was actually a market to support this book that i was writing so part of this was market research a sort of test. We have to water a little bit and see if there was enough support for an idea like this to come out with a book for this particular niche. My initial funding goal was $5000 and when I put together my budget, when I thought about was. I’m willing to make an investment in this project and if other people are willing to invest with me as well then, I’m going to kick in some funding. My actual budget was about $10000 for the production of the book and so i set the campaign budget for half of that. If I can raise half the money I can kick in the other half and that would make it ok.

0:04:05 MARIA: Ok, so you came up with the budget of 10000 is like a fifty-fifty.50% you would be putting in and then 50% your contributors will be putting in. Now, what did you end up raising from your $5000 goal?

0:04:26 EBONY: I ended up raising just over $12000 for the project which it only took about 6 or 7 days to hit the $5000 mark and then the whole campaign went for about 30 days. So I was really elated to raise that amount of money so quickly the thing about Kickstarter is that when you set your campaign timeline you set it typically 30 days and even if you raise your target early the campaign doesn’t end it just keep going that’s how we went over the $5000 amount.

0:05:12 MARIA: How did you decide to use Kickstarter rather than someplace like Indiegogo. The reason I ask is because with Kickstarter for those who may not be familiar with it, with Kickstarter it’s an all or nothing thing if you don’t reach your goal or you don’t get to keep any of the contribution but on Indiegogo you don’t have to reach a goal you get to keep whatever you raise. And so, tell me how you decided on Kickstarter.

0:05:48 EBONY: Yes, both platforms when I’m just in this campaign back a couple of years ago both platforms are really really early on in there sort of introduction and the modelling. One thing about Indiegogo and I haven’t look in a while but at the time if you didn’t raise your campaign goal there actual cost to you was higher than if you hit your goal. So that was one factor, the other factor I thought to myself if I can’t get the support that I need to do this project then i really need to think very hard about whether or not i should go forward and take this, so it wasn’t just about raising a certain amount of money it was also making sure that I was able to garner enough support to go forward.

0:06:43 MARIA: Right, right, which was really smart to use Kickstarter as a market research tool because I know so many authors who just jump in they spend the money and then find out really that they didn’t know how to promote the book there is really know readership for the book and if they have done something like this beforehand they could have save themselves a lot of heartache.

0:07:06 EBONY: Yes, Absolutely!

0:07:08 MARIA: So let me ask you Ebony, It took you 30 days. The campaign was 30 days. How long did it take you to prepare for the campaign to actually get everything on Kickstarter get your video, get all that materials that you needed, how long did that take you?

0:07:29 EBONY: It took me probably about 3-4 weeks of planning part of that time Kickstarter had a pretty rigorous review process also so you couldn’t just put something out there and hit go and it just public they actually would go through and review your project to make sure it was appropriate for the platform the other component is writing the compelling copy. So I think in the media industry we call it romance copy. Writing that copy that’s really going to inspire and really reach the folks that I’m trying to reach and communicate my own passion and devising the reward that In and of itself I was racking my brain trying to think about what types of reward I mean obviously the book a copy of the book that’s pretty simple but in order to get people to sort of contribute that higher level i had to come up and really get creative with something and the thing about Kickstarter is when you offer a reward they have to be tangible reward it can’t be like a coupon for a future purchase for something like that it’s got to be something that people actually receive and it’s worth something at the time and it’s not some sort of “Hey if you don’t knit here I’ll contribute 10 dollars to charity. It has to be something that the backer get out of it. And i think i refer to it as investment but it’s really not an investment because you’re not yet shares

0:09:13 MARIA: Right, right

0:09:15 EBONY: But you should get something out of it. It’s not a donation when you contribute you’re getting something in return.

0:09:19 MARIA: And so, how crucial do you think to be the big prices were? That the prices they should offer and the levels that you offer, how crucial were those?

0:09:25 EBONY: I think that they were instrumental in helping the campaign go as far as it did. When I think about my entire network of people so just in my own personal network not everybody is a quilter not everybody is a die cutter so if all I offered was the die cutting book that’s not going to be of interest necessarily to everyone so there could be folks think: “You know what? I support what you do I’m really thrilled about this and I want to make sure it is successful but I really don’t need a coffee-table book.

0:10:13 MARIA:*laughs*

0:10:17 EBONY: The other piece two is by having different levels of contribution it gives people the opportunity to look and say “There’s a level here that I can afford. Because not everybody can just say here’s 30 bucks for a book that I’m not going to read. Some people may be able to contribute a dollar other people might say.”You know what I really support this artist, I know this person I feel good about what they’re doing, I can actually contribute a higher level so actually having those different reward level it gives you a choice i personally think i had too many and at the end of the day you’re the one who has to actually fulfill all those rewards.

0:11:04 MARIA:*laughs* Right.

0:11:08 EBONY:*laughs*After a while but i think having at least 3 or 4 options gives people sort of a way to contribute at a level there comfortable with.

0:11:18 MARIA: And so you had levels from a dollar all the way up to 1500 dollars and what was your most popular level?

0:11:29 EBONY: My most popular level I believe was at the 50 dollar level you’ve got a copy of the book and some other little trinket so I think my average donation across the board was about 46 dollars so some people came in lower than that, some people came in higher than that but most people were right in middle of a reward.

0:12:00 MARIA: I’m looking at your Kickstarter site right now and it looks like you had a 104 backers at 30 dollars. Now, do you think it was the dollar amount? Do you think it was just the right amount? Or do you think it was the acknowledgement that they’ve got in getting the book as the reward?

0:12:22 EBONY: I think so, I think most of the people who purchased at that level were once who wanted the book. They were rolling to get that book so it was a way for them and what’s interesting when you structure your reward, is it’s not necessarily meant to be a like discount of a retail price although some that way it’s actually meant to be because you do need feed bonds so the book actually retails for 30 dollars so that was like the level. I think that level people were going to buy the book anyway when it came out and that’s the level that they supported.

0:13:09 MARIA: Okay, And what did you do to promote the campaign as far as social media and email marketing and get the word out, What did you do to promote it ?

0:13:22 EBONY: so I actually did a several tiers of marketing and I didn’t want to bombard my network with you know just post after post after post of this particular campaign. The first method that Senel was just a family and close friends just to first get started with the toe on the water and also when you put it out to just friends and family you tend to get kind of that bubble of will support anything that you do and that makes you feel better. You feel better about what you’re doing to get some of that initial push and then I put it up on Facebook to wider the audience which will include my friends and friends of friends and hope to unnecessarily no personally but we’re friends on Facebook and that’s the next level campaign and some of those folks even shared my campaign with their friends and that’s another way to get to expanse. The third way was just through my newsletter list so I have an email list for my business where I send out announcement about where I’m going to be and what’s going on with my business and where you can see me that went to my email list. I also posted on my blog talking about the Kickstarter campaign and what it meant and what I was trying to do. I have several avenue to pursue but I didn’t do them all at once. I didn’t’ post everywhere on the same day. I spread it out over probably a week to 10 day period to reach all those audiences.

0:15:13 MARIA: Ok, and do you have any idea of which promotion garnered the most support?

0:15:22 EBONY: I believe it was probably the Iddy mount campaign just because there were thousands of people on my email list versus a couple of dozens on my Facebook page.

0:15:39 MARIA: So you have an email marketing list with several thousand contacts on?

0:15:47 EBONY: Yes. I think it’s the time I probably had under a thousand people subscribe to my email list. Now it certainly grown as my name has gotten out there but I think it’s the time it was under a thousand people on my email list but it was certainly a lot bigger of an audience than on my Facebook page.

0:16:09 MARIA: Okay, I actually learned about your campaign from somebody on our yahoo group. We both belong to a quilter yahoo group and somebody posted on there: “Ebony is doing a Kickstarter campaign. I was so excited for you I went out and just immediately supported you on it because you were self-publishing a book. I’ve done it well and I know that having a child and so much work involved in that. I didn’t even hear directly about it from you but I still supported you so that leads to my next question which is what percentage of your supporters would you say were people that you knew? Or you would have contact with before? And what percentage of people that you did not know at all?

0:16:57 EBONY: That’s interesting. I don’t have exact percentages but I would tell you that probably 80% to 90% on the people were folks that I did not know personally.

0:17:11 MARIA: That’s incredible!

0:17:12 EBONY:*Laughs* That’s funny because take you for example, I knew a name and obviously seen you on the email list but you and I have….. It’s like knowing of someone isn’t is the same thing as knowing them.

0:17:30 MARIA: Exactly!

0:17:32 EBONY: I had quite a bit of that where I see people’s names pop up and say:” Hey! I read your blog”, “I read your book” or “I saw a video of you on YouTube”, I’m certainly sharing having other people hear about it and then share it with their friends. I don’t want say viral because I think when people speak of viral I think it goes out to like millions of people. But from where I sat I was reaching a group of people that I never would have been able to reach on my own and it was purely because of other people. Maybe viral is the right word is I kind of like the passion and the excitement was of infectious. Now it cause other people to pass it along.

0:18:20 MARIA: Yes. It really was friends of friends sharing about your campaign. It’s not necessarily on any particular social network but just wherever they were.

0:18:32 EBONY: Yes and it’s so important. I sort of research for my campaign because I was looking to see what other publishing project have been successful and which one were not successful and what did that look like what were the lessons that I could’ve learned from kind of seeing those things and a lot of times where I’ve seen is people just putting stuff out there and it’s like those are the people would come

0:19:00 MARIA: Right, yes, exactly

0:19:02 EBONY: No it’s work you can’t just put something out there and just hope upon hoping cross your fingers that some media outlet picks it up and raises you know 3 million dollars.

0:19:16 MARIA: Right, right, it was worth to promote it but then your supporters help you, your friends, and your colleagues they help spread the word. Yes absolutely! Did you have any help in promoting your campaign other than friends? Did you hire anybody to help? Was there anything that you did other than the things on your own to get help in promoting your campaign?

0:19:48 EBONY: I did not. I think the only other thing that I did is I reach out to shake bench from Generation Q magazine. They were the publishing project that I tried to model my campaign afterward so I reach out to kind of get some advice from her on running the campaign. It turns out afterwards I didn’t hire anybody or seek any other consultants for that which should research reaching out to folks whose been there. Just like you’re doing with me now, talk to the folks who’s been there. The quilting community is so incredibly supportive and open and willing to share.

0:20:35 MARIA: Yes. Absolutely! Do you think that played a big part of it in that the quilting community has warned that it’s usually support of pretty close knit and it’s even though it’s a large group, it’s a small world?

0:20:52 EBONY: Yes. I think of it a lot like despite building a tribe, what you’re doing is first you got this quilting community who are sort of already predisposed to share and a passion about something. You’re already certain have something in common with that group of people. I think that that part of certainly types of people who are attracted to quilting tend to be very giving, open and just a happy bunch of people.

0:21:28 EBONY: Just by that nature alone, you’ve already got a leg of so to speak, it doesn’t mean that you don’t have to do the other stuff and work hard and do the promotion. It certainly easier than trying to find out who you’re actual audience is. If you were doing something completely random, then it’s now necessarily community base. I’m trying to think of an example of that, let say you’ve got some new technology to fight or something. You have to find your audience for that.

0:22:05 MARIA: Right! For something that nobody has ever heard of before.

00:22:09 EBONY: Exactly!

0:22:12 MARIA: So Ebony, what was your advice be to someone who want to start their own crown funding campaign? If you were to do this all over again, what would your advice be?

0:22:22 EBONY: I think one of the major thing is think very carefully about the timeline because doing these types of creative project. The point about six starter isn’t that there’s kind of this readymade thing. It’s not a pre-order. If you’re trying to start something and if you’ve never done something before, it’s going to take you longer than you’re most optimistic thought.* laughs*

0:22:58 MARIA: So, build some buffer time in there! (Laughs)

0:23:02 EBONY: Yes, definitely build some buffer time in there. By doing most of the stuff by myself, I was just very optimistic about what I was going to be able to accomplish. I didn’t anticipate further running into issue and things just happened. I mean, at the days that my campaign ended I was actually laid out with pneumonia.

0:23:27 MARIA: Oh my gosh!

0:23:28 EBONY: I didn’t anticipate getting sick and taking actual month to recover from that. You have to account for the unexpected. Definitely, recruit friends to help beforehand because I have a bunch of friends to help me pack and ship rewards I had like an actual reward shipping day. Friends came over and they were put note boxes and pack boxes and writing thank you notes in doing all the thing they could help. There’s that piece budget, I got a little caught up in the excitement. It’s like “Hey, if you raise more money you can do more stuff with that money”. I actually ended up producing two books. (Laughs) It was great to have both of the books but it did have an impact on the budget later on. If you really look at your expenses and make sure you’re accounting for the cost of shipping, the cost of packaging supplies, the cost of stamps and tapes. All of those things cost money and have an impact on your budget. Definitely, you need to have an audience. You need to make sure that you have a network to pull from. Because it’s really hard to do it on your own if you don’t have that list. If you want to feed on it though, and you can’t feed on something if it’s empty, you know?

0:25:06 MARIA: Right, because I think people would believe that Kickstarter will promote your campaign. And no, you promote your campaign. You’re the one who does that. That’s interesting. Think about what it’s going to cost you to fulfill all those rewards that you’re giving and recruit help beforehand. Those are the important stuff. My last question in my interview is always the same. Is there a question that I should’ve asked you that didn’t?

0:25:44 EBONY: Oh gosh. No. I’m thinking about a question that I have been thinking about…. The only thing that I would tell people is that, there’s so many things out there. So many different ways to reach people. Kickstarter for me wasn’t just about the campaign. So much happen afterward that just really helped roll my business and put my name out there. It connected me to so many people. For me, it wasn’t just about that campaigning but it kick started my whole life.

0:26:33 MARIA: So, it opened up a lot of those opportunities beyond just the book.

0:26:39 EBONY: Yes

0:26:40 MARIA: You really weren’t able to foresee but that you still benefitted from.

0:26:44 EBONY: No

0:26:46 MARIA: Fantastic

0:26:47 EBONY: It lead me to teaching and I travel and people when I walk around the foot show and people know who I am. Both contributed to the Kickstarter that reach out and: “Ah, I help you publish the book” and that’s so much fun.

It’s almost like they were – I don’t want to say a key to campaign – but they felt like you were contributing to your success. So they were a part of it.

So this next book, I’m really thinking about doing another press run a right way to go or should this actually be done to the print on demand and that doesn’t have much upfront investment.

0:28:54 EBONY: It could be something think about it not from the necessarily from the money raising stand point but just for visibility in marketing. At this point I can sort of I’m able for the self-fund. You don’t want another……

TUTORIAL: The One-Click Blog Post (for People Who Hate to Blog)

Ever wish your blog posts could write themselves?

Do you hate to blog? (No worries — I have LOTS of clients who feel the same way.)

This tutorial is going to change your life. Literally.

In this epic article, you'll learn how to put your own blog posts on autopilot: they'll create themselves with little-to-no interaction from you, freeing up your time for family, travel, or other work projects you actually enjoy.

Here's the background: I'm an art quilter, watercolor artist, and author of eight published books. Socialmediaonlineclasses.com is my full-time business, and my art is how I relax.  I now have so many watercolor paintings I wanted to offer some of them for sale on a blog.  But I really don't have time to do yet another blog.

So I systemized the entire blog post creation process: all I do is take a photo of the watercolor painting, and the system takes over from there. It uploads the photo to the blog, adds a title, what type of painting it is (landscape, floral, etc), the price, and even sends it to an e-commerce site where it's listed for sale as well.

I created this blog post with one click on my smartphone.

Let me be clear: this entire process, from uploading the photo, to creating the blog post, to adding the blog post categories, to creating the e-commerce listing on Daily Paintworks was automated by the system I developed.  The only thing I had to do was add a PayPal button to the blog post (which I did later).

Total time for creating the blog post? Less than 1 minute.​

CREATING THE ONE CLICK BLOG POST SYSTEM

1. Tools You'll Need

First, let's talk about what tools you'll need to create your own one-click blog post system. Most of you know I'm not a "tools" person, so I've kept it simple:

    • a smartphone
    • image on your smartphone
    • Instagram
    • WordPress blog
    • Zapier (free)
    • if you want to systemize the e-commerce portion of the blog post, you'll need to use a platform that imports your blog posts automatically.  Daily Paintworks does this and costs $12/mo.

2. Upload a Photo to Instagram

The one-click blog post system starts when I upload a photo to Instagram from my smartphone.  

I add a caption and a unique tag that identifies this post as the one I want to go to my blog:

That's all there is to it for Instagram.  Pretty easy, huh?

Then Zapier takes over . . .

3. Automate the WordPress Blog Post Using Zapier

This is where the magic happens. 

By creating one Zapier automation (they call it a zap), my blog posts are automatically created by Zapier every time I upload a photo to Instagram that uses the #mariapeagler hashtag.

Here's how it works:

  • I develop a new zap in Zapier using my Instagram account and my WordPress blog (shown below).
  • Anytime I upload a photo to Instagram, Zapier checks it for the #mariapeagler hashtag. If it finds it ...
  • ... it creates a new blog post on mariapeagler.com using the Instagram image and caption.  It adds several default categories (these are the paintings I do the most) to the blog post.
  • Zapier publishes the blog post immediately.  The Zapier zap is shown below:

Once I set up the Zap, I'm all done.  Anytime I upload an image to Instagram with the #mariapeagler hashtag, Zapier immediately creates the blog post on the mariapeagler.com blog.

5. Set Up Daily Blog Feed Imports to an E-Commerce Website

Daily Paintworks is an e-commerce website allowing you to sell your artwork on their platform.  It's an excellent way for artists to increase their visibility, sell their artwork, and expand their brand outside of their local/regional area.

I add my blog feed URL to my Account Information and check the box stating I want it to pull my blog posts at midnight every day:

In my Account Information, I tell DailyPaintworks the URL of my blog feed

Daily Paintworks then automatically creates a listing for my art. I don't have to lift a finger:
