We're looking at simple cybersecurity for small business. It to be really comes down to a three-pronged approach: having an SSL certificate, which is what gives you that HTTPS in your URL for your website; using a security plugin. These are both before you get attacked. These are what you can do to prevent an attack. If one happens, how do you recover? I'm going to be going over all three of these. You're going to be getting a really nice infographic at the end that I'm going to recommend that you go ahead and download and print out. You're going to find out why as we go along.

First, let's talk about the SSL certificate. What is it and why do you need it? SSL stands for secure socket layer. The bottom line is it encrypts any data that is transferred between your website's server and a visitor's computer. When somebody visits your website, their computer transmits all kinds of information to your serve, like their IP address, their location, what browser they have. There's a lot of data that's going back and forth. The SSL certificate makes sure that that data is encrypted and a hacker can't get access to it. It's a two-way street here. Not only is your visitor ensured that their data is going to be protected, but any data that they receive from you is going to be encrypted also. It keeps data private and safe.

Now it used to be that the only websites that needed an SSL certificate were the ones that took credit cards, like PayPal, or Shopify, or any kind of online shopping or ecommerce website. That is not the case anymore. Because hackers' tactics have evolved, now everyone needs an SSL certificate. It's so important that if you don't have an SSL certificate, Google will rank your site lower, and it will also display a little message under your search results saying this site may not be secure, which basically turns off organic traffic, because nobody is going to go to a site that has that message. It's really important for you to do this.

Now I'll give you a little anecdote about this. Last night my husband and I were talking about what today's webinar was going to be about. My husband now has his own residential home building business, but he used to be in IT. He used to manage the data center for a very large cellphone company. They got bought out, but the cellphone company was ALTEL. He knows computers. He knows all this stuff. He's like, "Yeah, yeah, I know. Don't visit foreign websites. Don't do this." I said, "Well, no, that's not what you do anymore." I told him what we were going to be talking about, and he looked at me and he said, "I need to hire you next week to protect my website." It's become that important. If you do nothing else, you want to get this SSL certificate. Here's what you do. Here's your SSL to do list. It's actually really, really easy.

Your hosting company provides this. You're going to call your hosting company and you're going to order an SSL certificate for your website. Then you'll pay whatever the fee is. It's usually about $50 a year, but some hosting companies might provide it for free, especially if you pressure them a little bit. I know we don't like to do that, but my hosting company, which is a more expensive one, actually provided it for free when I got my hosting from them.

I've got a couple of examples here. Here's GoDaddy, which is very popular. They offer an SSL certificate. In fact, they offer all different kinds. You can see theirs is about $56 a year. It protects one website. There's nothing that you have to do, which is awesome. They do it for you. Now here is my hosting company. It's Liquid Web. Again, they offer different SSL certificates and they start at $50. Like I said, they provided mine for free, and I didn't even ask them. They just threw it in with my hosting. This is the number one thing you need to do, and it's the easiest thing that you can do.
